Kitsur Shulchan Aruch

Kitsur Shulchan Aruch 13. The laws of holiness of the synagogue and Beit Midrash

1. The sanctity of the synagogue and Beit Midrash is very high, and our attitude to them is determined by the duty to tremble before Him, blessed be His name, He who lives in them, as it is written: "And the temple of my fear." A synagogue and Beit Midrash also referred to as the word "church," as it is written, "And I will be to them a little temple," and our sages of blessed memory explained: "This synagogue and Beit Midrash." And so in these places it is prohibited to talk about budnichnom1. And there are business calculations, if they are not connected with the performance of the commandments, such as counting money for charity, etc. And care must be taken in order to maintain their dignity, their sweep and wash the floor in them, and they lit the light for the same purpose - to make it look decent. In these places, do not kiss young children because there is not proper to show no other love but the love of Gd, blessed be His name.

2. Before entering into the synagogue and Beit Midrash, you must wipe their feet, and it is necessary to ensure that neither the incoming nor on his clothing was mud. In these places you are allowed to spit on the floor, but you must spit immediately grind nogoy1 *.

3. These buildings are not hidden either from the sun on sunny days, no rain - rainy. And if a man should go in there to cause a companion - Let him come in and read there any verses from the Torah, or the Mishnah, or utter any prayer; or 2 let hear from other places complicated explanation of the Torah; or at least let him sit there a little (after all, just sitting there, too, fulfills the commandment), and then let them cause a comrade.

4. In the synagogue and Beit Midrash is not allowed to eat and drink, and there can not sleep, even nedolgo3. And if it is necessary for the commandments, as, for example, on the night of Yom Kippur, where you can sleep, you should just stay away from the Ark. And also to organize there meals related to the command, not leading to any drunkenness, not to thoughtlessly razresheno4. And also those who are constantly learning there may be in the same place to eat, drink and sleep, even the usual night's sleep, so as not to come off once again from the study.

5. When building a synagogue, it is necessary to ask the wise guidance, as well as how to do it.

1 Even everyday conversation, you need to work.

1 * Arizal wary spit. And those who are trying not to spit on the floor at home - perhaps they are forbidden to spit.

2 It is about a man who can not read the Chumash and the Talmud.

3 In the Beit Midrash is allowed to sleep for long. (And some doubt it). And if there praying - is unclear.

4 And in any case, if it is the custom to hold a feast on the occasion of the completion of the treatise in the Beit Midrash due to the lack of another place, this should not be banned. And this applies to countries outside the Land of Israel. (And in the Land of Israel, if such a condition has been stipulated in the construction of the Beit Midrash, maybe it can also be solved. It can be concluded from BG words).
